30 Dec 2011: AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE

Russians are the main expat group here, mostly because of their connection with joint ventures in offshore oil. But the next most numerous, and much more friendly, are the Australians. Mainly boomers, they seem to be living here quietly, not work-related. Several bars and restaurants are owned by Aussies and the menu and decor is fair dinkum, mate.

Australia was the biggest ally of the U.S. in the war here in the 1960's and 1970's; 60,000 troops! Vung Tau was the main base for them, and American troops came here for R&R. Nearby is the Long Tan Memorial Cross, erected by survivors of a particularly fierce battle between Aussies and the Viet Cong (18 August 1966 ---- where were you??). Reunions of survivors and their charitable work are held here, with the writing on the wall as they decline in numbers.

That was then. These days the Aussies gather to talk cricket, ride their motorbikes, and accompany local girls. For us, the Aussies have also been an ally. We have had cravings for comfort foods for the last 2 months and now we're in the promised land. Milk shakes, French toast, meat pies with chips, homestyle coffee in mugs, and more. We may be gaining back all the weight we lost in China. My shout, cobbers. Hat's off to Downunder!
