07 Jan 2012: 35,000 To 17

A looooong double Friday yesterday as we went from hotel to Shanghai Airport to 35,000 feet with Air Canada to early sunrise over the Date Line. (Aside: Every Asian airline we flew on had better aircraft, food, service, on-time departure, and positive attitude than Air Canada. I'm just sayin'.) Arrivals walk under a mystical but unmistakenly Canadian Haida shaman. Fast immigration, great self-serve customs kiosks, slow luggage, and then a wild welcome from our friend Alaia whom we haven't seen since the 2010 Olympics. Picked up rental car ("economy" car turns out to be a cool 2012 Chrysler 200).

No jetlag until evening when we dozed an hour but were wide awake by midnight. Favourite coffee and cereal for Saturday breakfast, although in the fog and drizzle seen from the 17th floor. We're happily back on Canadian soil. I have satisfied my itch to drive again, and to see the Detroit Lions on TV. Pat has yearned to garden and cook ---- so she repotted a gum tree and baked a casserole. The trail has brought us from the mythical lions of China to the football Lions to the Lion's Gate Bridge ---- sleep should be better tonight!
