01 Nov. 2011: Street Feet Meet Street Meat

Wherever I've traveled I like to eat street food that the locals buy cheap and on-the-spot. It could be croque monsieur in Marseille or taco de res in Jalisco or jaffle in Java or or or. Beijing is a new challenge because I can't ask and they probably can't tell what I'm looking at! And in a land where "hot dog" might be quite literal, it's not hard to pass up pig intestine stuffed with red cabbage in sewer grease, or deep-fried goat eyeballs. On the other hand, some street food is quite familiar such as roasted whole yam or kabobs. This time of year what we would call steamed corn-on-the-cob is everywhere and the #1 snack.
All this choice is complicated by the neon signs beckoning from across the street: good old KFC, McDonald's, Papa John's, and Pizza Hut. Last night we strolled through this gauntlet ---which way do you think we went??
