23 Dec 2011: THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Settling into a few non-stressed days here. Mornings are a beach walk for the good (shells, picturesque fishing boats) and the bad (beach erosion) and the ugly (jellyfish left by the tide). Oh, we moved over to #07, about 220 sq.ft. and steps to the sand, but Holiday rate is an outrageous 450,000 dong ($22). The main drag has fruit stands, lots of eating places and motorbike rentals.

Back on the beach, women repair the nets and keep house in the fishermen's tin shacks, within sight of the better hotels. Sure-footed palm-climbers bring down the day's coconuts. The daily catch includes snakes, eels, and frogs for the Russians and French visitors. Or would you rather look at the bougainvillea?
