The World's Largest Motorcycle Event!

For the next 10 days, Daytona Beach IS the World's Largest Motorcycle Event. At the same time, it is the 70th Anniversary of Bike Week. It is freakin' crazy. They expect 500,000 bike fans and 200,000 bikes! That's seven times as many cars that come out for the world's biggest CAR cruise in Detroit. And all 200,000 parade 3 blocks away from us on Main Street, or roar up and down outside nearby Daytona Speedway.

The bikers don't sleep. First there's the blup-blup-blup when the Harleys fire up, then the rrrAAAAAAAA through the gears, then the bllllaaaagggghhhhh all day long. The constant drone sounds like a flypast of a thousand Lancaster bombers in old WWII movies. Funny thing, it is absolutely awesome and energizing. I want a badass bike right now, right here, to join in.

The only other place on earth where the party is crazier also starts today in Rio de Janiero, the lewdest and most outrageous nonstop samba-is-life with 10-storey high floats and 10,000 drummers in each band and fat dirty old Momo, King of Carnival leading the way. My spirit is split today but those Billion Brazilian sequins will have to shimmy without me this time.

Every bar and motel is overflowing. There is every model, colour, age, size, accessory, and modification ---- and that's just the drivers!! I hope you like bikes and bikers because this blog will be on the streets with them all week.

  1. I have friends that go each year for the races. They don't look like the bikers in your pictures. Are you dressing in leather for the occasion?
