PAT and a PDG are DIG

Here's Pat's story about another dirty Saturday morning, about 8a.m. to be exact...

DIG (Daytona Improvement Gardeners) was formed only last year by newly elected commissioner Kelly White and her friend Ciana. This morning I worked alongside Ciana pruning heritage roses and learning about DIG and gardening in tropical Zone 8/9.

The mission of DIG is to beautify Daytona one plant at a time. In less than a year approximately 80 members have volunteered to donate money, plants and/or time. The results so far are impressive --- no chemicals used, and only hardy or native plants!

So how did these two 30 something Founders get the gardening bug? From Alys Clancy! Turns out that Alys & her friend Nancy Shields started a campaign in 1948 to preserve the remaining natural areas and beautify Daytona. Alys & Nancy convinced all the garden clubs to work together to secure land and create a 90 acre park/preserve in downtown Daytona. Alys is the revered namesake of her book Plain Dirt Gardener (PDG).

Kudos to Ciana & Kelly who are carrying on as PDG's in the tradition of Alys. You're all invited to get your hands DID --- Dirty in Daytona!
