We power walk a few miles at sunrise each morning, and the natural loop route here is out via the beach and back via a shore road. A few other early birds are out, many of them are propped up on only one leg. The crowds come later in vehicles of all kinds parking on the sand. The spiffy new Volusia County Lifeguard Headquarters looms over the scene but lifeguard stands are lined up like Trojan horses --- away from the beach!
Other sights are the 88-year old pier being rebuilt under wraps, jelly fish washed up overnight, flocks of shore birds pecking at morsels only they can see, and guys putting out the lane markers. It's one of the few ocean beaches in the world that you can drive on ---- the other one we've driven on is 90 Mile Beach in New Zealand. Any others you know of?
Because the shore slopes so little the tide comes in or goes out at about 100 feet an hour. Saltwater car wash, anyone??
