Last week the original main road of the Daytona settlement was overrun by the 100,000's of motorcycles and vendor tents. Today Beach Road (a mile from the beach!) reveals itself with bankrupt car dealerships, non-bankrupt bike showrooms and empty weed-filled lots in between. But the amazing history of this strip comes through as loud as any Harley.
The diamond uncovered from last week's rough is the restored home of David Dunham Rogers and his daughter Dr. Jodie. He was the first settler and surveyor of the area, she was the first female doctor and the first (1922)--- and still only --- female mayor of Daytona. And much more.
Also revealed is an island park (deeded by the Rogers' estate), a riverside walking trail in sight of manatees and nesting ducks, the best library we've seen in Florida, memorial gardens, memorials to Confederate soldiers, an art deco district, historic homes, and the Jackie Robinson Baseball Stadium. Jackie gets a blog post of his own next time. The rest is history.
P.S. My camera has been complaining of overuse and is giving poorly exposed and unfocused images. Do not adjust your set, it is not the fault of your receiver.
