Sadness but the Games Go On

The death of Georgian luger Nodar Kumaritashvili was the only event that the VANOC organizers couldn't have foreseen for Opening Day. IOC and VANOC leaders were clearly shocked and saddened by the tragedy. You will have seen the tributes to Nodar on TV or in your news sources. We too were heartbroken, especially for his family.

Vancouver is swept up in these Games, and you will see and hear about it every day for the next weeks. These blog posts can only give you some impressions of what is happening away from the main media. Visitors continue to party, the flame continues to burn outdoors, and Olympic workers continue to beam in their dedication. But the tragedy of Nodar has muted the party and even the Spirit Bear stands still by the lowered flags.
