The lack of snow or any other sign of winter here is a main topic of conversation and regret. One of the eagles depicts kids playing in the snow, which the TV weathergirl has declared impossible by Opening Day. One of the display kiosks has a very lush grass roof. The international press have written stories about the lack of buzz and fun.
But the athletes have begun to move into their Village and their flags and banners are colourful splashes on the too-green horizons. And leave it to the Aussies to stir things up. They have hung a 2-storey high flag of a boxing kangaroo from their building. It is a trademarked insignia of the Australian team, so as usual the IOC is upset that there is any "commercialism" except their own! They have ordered the Aussies to take it down and predictably the Aussies have said "Get stuffed" which translates to that common North American phrase that ends in Off! So the fun and games have officially begun, with the Aussies taking the giant gold medal for Making Us Laugh.
