Blogger's Note: Rick is currently NOT on the road but the blog is starting up anyway. There have been so many blog-worthy events and fun situations since we returned in late March. And today, Canada Day, is a high point of the year...
On a beautiful sunshining morning hundreds of we locals gathered at the dock in Big Bay (pop. 100 max) to celebrate our country's 144th birthday. In a sea of red worn by all ages, the neighbourhood bagpiping eccentric Keith Davidson emceed a short but heartfelt tribute to our township, our county, our country --- and even our OHL-Champion hockey team, the Owen Sound Attack (can you spot the mascot)! Kate and William were up the road in Ottawa, but we felt our party was just as exciting. Did they have cake with home-made Big Bay ice cream?? I think not.
By comparison, our crowd was about 300. The fly-by was one curious Cessna. The military was 2 shy local guys just back from Afghanistan. The concert was a guitar rendition of O Canada. The dignitaries were the Youngest Canadian present (70 days) and the Oldest Canadian (97 years). Throw in a mountie, a Coast Guard cutter, a crystal-clear lake and 144 balloons ---- how Canadian can you get??
Back at home, it's a rare day off from our work. We cruised with the top down. We had a red and white (salsa and sour cream) chip party by the pond. Pat unfurled our flag. And tonight, like Kate and Wills we'll watch a spectacular fireworks display, but without the mobs and parking hassle. Happy Canada Day, the blog is back!!
