The Rough Side of Town

The north and west shores of this island are mostly sandy gentle beaches. But the east and south shores get pounded by heavy surf and frequent storms (the current Hurricane Tomas is about 200 miles away today, glancing off Haiti). So swimming and surfing are no-no's due to the jagged rocks and non-existant escape ladders. But the wild water scenery is mesmerizing so a mile-long walkway ("malecon") has been attempted over the years. A great walking/jogging path for early risers like us.

The trouble is that the seawalls are no match for the salt-spray and anything metal rusts in months. The uneven cement mix cracks or erodes just as fast. Lightposts short out in the wetness and wooden gazebos get ripped apart by the roaring winds. Only the rock cages set up at the base keep the whole thing from diasappearing altogether!

So the malecon is a field of broken hotels, kids' murals that fade annually, and as close as you can get to a rough side of town!
