Fresh Fish

This island has basically been a fishing village for hundreds of years, back to the early Mayans. The shallows, the depths, the channels and the bays were --- and amazingly still are --- full of lobster, conch, shark, grouper, yellow tail, palmetto, red snapper, octopus, barracuda, etc, etc, etc. Although a lot of young guys are now more attracted to jobs in tourism or construction, there is still a hardy bunch of fishermen who go out before dawn in open boats to the open sea. The nets are nylon now instead of rope but the skills are the same. And, like Forrest Gump's famous box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get!

We really like fresh fish dinners, so we'll be down at the shore often, checking out the catch of the day. Take your pick and it is cleaned and filleted on the spot. The boatmen will even offer you some of their breakfast --- a mouthful of local tequila!
