Although these are called the "Vancouver Olympics", 9 of the 15 competitions take place 100 miles north of Vancouver at Whistler B.C. It's a resort town that has boomed in the last 10 years or so and has consistently been voted the top ski spot in North America. The name Whistler comes from a particular local variety of marmot that makes a distinctive whistling sound.
The ski hills are privately owned and are frantically trying to let recreational skiers know that 90% of the hills will be available during the Games ---- the Olympic ski events take place on only 10% of the slopes!
All-new and all-raved-about are the facilities for ski jumping, luge, bobsleigh, and skeleton. These are the "sliding events" that are always a favourite to watch.
