Back in
Canada we drove through some typical quaint Newfie outports and towns lost in
time. Always the presence of fishing, but also scenic hikes and spectacular views.
These were the locales of whimsical movies like The Grand Seduction and Random Passage.
Notable spots
were the world’s most root cellars, heart-wrenching tributes to lost sealers,
and flocks of seabirds, puffins, and eagles.
The loop
around Cape Bonavista is recommended. This is where Giovanni Caboto (aka John
Cabot) first landed to claim Canada for Britain. Again, awesome scenery and
alpine blossoms amid stiff ocean winds and spray.
BUT! After imagining
them all our lives --- our first icebergs!! Lucky for us they are late this
year and still growling down the coast. First some basic lumps and small remnants
of giant ice cathedrals.
And then bigger
--- these looked like two soft-serve cones in ice. The blues and fissures are
mysterious and captivating --- how old? Where from? Here comes a boat --- will
we see a Titanic moment as it scrapes by?! The dismal weather makes it all more
real and worth the trek…
More bergs
all along the shore road! This one looks like the Matterhorn from Switzerland
next to Table Rock in South Africa! You can even get bergs in a drive-through.
An exciting day of firsts though ending in pelting rains. We spent last night
at a traditional Newfie B&B called “Serendipity” --- we come from away…
