The biggest annual public event here is the Salmon Spectacular, now in its 24th year. It supports the local Sportsman's Association that stocked the fish in local waters in the first place. With 60 sponsors and an event tent 300 feet long, its now a family event with daily themes (was that Neil Diamond??) and prizes. Each morning the weigh-in lines form, with fisherfolk trading tips ("Got this here chinook at the Red Doors on a SilverFox...") and lies ("Had a 30-pounder in the boat but the dog ate it...").
We happened to see the new leader brought in this morning, a 21-pound salmon that barely fit in the carrying cooler. The Grand Prize is an outboard boat/motor/trailer/gear combination that will be awarded tomorrow.
Boats go in the water at several ramps but winners often are caught by people casting off the city
wharf. Growing up I fished a lot on the Detroit River, and I never caught a salmon. Still, I thought something was fishy when Pat showed up with this trophy ("Got this here Atlantic Salmon near the Deli Counter, on a Five Dollar Bill...").
