What used to be called "scrap yards" became "junk yards" and then "wrecking yards" and have now evolved into "vehicle recyclers". I had to get a part the other day and wound up at Nuhn's, a legendary place I've passed on Highway 6 for 30-some years. In Hughie Nuhn's case, you can call it "gold mine". He has about 5,000 cars at any one time and is constantly buying wrecks and reselling any good parts that remain on the CARcass. The office is online to the network of all recyclers in North America, but the yard is still mud ruts and if-you-can-find-it-you-can-remove-it-and-buy-it pieces. He buys the wreck for $500, sells $2000 of parts off it, you do the math.
The metal maze of paths leads to a real treasure hunt and nostalgia hit, pardon the pun. There's a restorable bronze 1970 Tempest sitting on a pile of Fords! There's a yellow Mustang newer than mine, that will never be on the road again. There's an '08 Dodge van newer than the one Pat got last month!
How about a new truck box for your 1970 to 2008 pickup? And, how many 1000's of ways can a car be smashed?
