MALLARDS AND MEMORIES

The pandemic continues to ravage populations and yet still brings out denial, deflection, and plain stupidity among so-called leaders. This will be very long and very bad...

Up on our hill the heavens bring daily relief and delight. Sunrises are like that legendary box of chocolates --- you never know what you'll get but it's always awesome. Add to that this year's supermoon rising. Plus amazing visuals, like this silver gash dividing line on the horizon. OMG.

Yardwork helps the mind and body in these days of restrictions. The chip pile gets spread over garden trails. Flower beds get weeded, tended, and encouraged. Last year's leaves are now wet, clumped, and heavy but hey --- somebody's got to move 'em. Rake 'n drag.

This week's bird sightings? Waves of warblers, too many to name and too fast to photograph. Maybe pix next week. Otherwise, the return of cardinals. And a splurge of sparrows, also in many varieties.

Polar vortex! Unseasonably cold below-freezing temps for many days. And blizzards!! Surprised us and the daffodils too.

But the big event this week is the take-over by a pair of mallards. A male showed up and seemed to claim his turf on the  driveway. Then a female arrived. Then they hung out on the rock ledge. Then a getting-to-know-you paddle in the water. The climax?? Watch the video (volume up) to see how ducks do it --- underwater!

A big week for memories. First, it was Cinco de Mayo, a day we note to honour our beloved Mexico. Nachos and pesos! Yesterday Little Richard passed away; he was exciting, rule-breaking, and a sensation in the music that defines my life. And today is Mother's Day. Memories fade but not the unconditional love.
