THINGS HAVE COOLED DOWN AND ARE LOOKING UP

The temperature today (20C) is HALF of what it was the previous 4 days (40C+). Still summery but the cooler mountain air and spectacular scenery are like a shot of energy and anticipation. Even though we've been in Alberta often, we haven't been in Banff for maybe 10 years. The hoodoos still stand like sentinels over the Bow River. Main Street still buzzes but the mountain background ominously has almost no snowcaps.

Walked around town like we haven't had a good walk in days, which is true. Elk, deer, marmots, and jack jays still hang around like they were here first, which is also true. People still get married, soak in the sulphur hot springs, and gawk at the Bow Falls making rainbows and whirlpools at the same time. Can't help but notice that many visitors have never been so close to beautiful nature or wildlife before ---- they smile, gawk, and seem to hold their breath in case it's a mirage that will vanish like their melting ice cream.

One new thing for us is camping within this national park. What a treat after hotel rooms! Pat can do Coleman Cooking again ---- tonight's new dish was Chicken a la Banff (chunks of leftover BBQ chook in Campbell's mushroom soup and pasta shells ---- scrumptious!). Of course, somebody has to do the dishes. But then it's back into town to watch the bushes being trimmed!
