A short walk from the old gates of Chiang Mai, and past several wats
(temple complex more like a neighbourhood centre), is the biggest Night Market in Thailand. It's centred along a main drag but spreads out on steps, sidewalks, and side roads to cover probably a hundred acres. Huge areas of knock-off clothes, silver, watches ("We Have the Best Copies!") and restaurants. Hey --- is that a baby for sale? Plus matching huge crowds and bus-loads of mostly women treasure-hunting every night. Pickpockets, touts, and scammers abound --- and that's just the customers!
Even Ronald gives the traditional Thai greeting of palms pressed together. But a guy in the crowd can get a much more interesting greeting from the famous She-He's, or the pretty LadyBoys. They have dressed, acted, and lived as females from age 10 or 11. Many are very pretty and attract a certain clientele. At the Night Market they dress in drag and do cabaret. All those showgirls are guys ---- can you tell??
