R&R ALMOST OVERRR

It's been six days on Koh Samui, a totally different experience from the rest of chaotic Thailand. We had lucked out with an online booking and got the most scenic, quiet, central  bay and best budget room. A Honda 125 is rented for $3.50 (for 24 hours!) and you drive 120km around the island (stay to the LEFT!). It becomes apparent that all the former fishing outposts are now blending together in a solid circumference with little variation. Zones of beach, bars, eateries, massage, motorbike rental, boat docks, and did I mention eateries? Oh, there's a phoney "Fishing Village" that is all trinkets and souvenirs. And there is a mural competition done by schoolkids. And a floating dock that rolls with the waves. But mostly, it's like the local slogan --- "Same, Same, But Different".

Nearby is the Big Buddha, 80 feet of divine inspiration surrounded by a supporting cast of whimsical figures. The devout check their fortune on posted sheets --- your fate is determined by the day of the week you were born!

It's been a needed break from the heat and buses but we're moving on tomorrow. It will be hard to beat this place for relaxation, reading, and familiar things to eat. We've had 2 guests in our room --- one is the guy replacing the on-demand hot water heater. The other is a mottled wiry kitten who has been sucking up to Pat. Many other cats prowl the grounds ---- who gives out their room assignments? I'll miss the unusual plants, mystery tree pods, and even the deafening jet landings that are like a 150-decibel alarm clock. Goodbye pretty postcard!
