HOP/STEP/JUMP TO KOH SAMUI

QUIZ: IF you have been traveling in the sticky heat for a few weeks, and IF Bangkok is swept up in closures and violence, and IF there are now 6 budget airlines in Thailand. Do you (A) take a 15-hour overnight train + a day in transit through central protests + a night in hostel dorms to wait + a 12-hour bus. (Total = 48 hours, costs= $200) Or do you (B) fly 1 hour from Chiang Mai + wait an hour in Bangkok Airport (play with the interactive wall!)+ fly 1 hour to Suri Thani (Total = 5 hours, costs=$275)??  Answer: B.

It was really a no-brainer to take advantage of cheap NOK Air fares for the 900 miles south. From mainland Suri Thani there's a bus/ferry combination to Koh ("island") Samui. What a span in one day, from exhaust-ing city chaos to wave-lapping shores in the Gulf of Siam. It's overrun with travellers with many hundreds of places to stay and eat, but the vibe is gentle and friendly to all nations and ages. At the Samui Mermaid, we have our own $20 (a splurge for Thailand) bungalow at the shore, 2 pools, luscious manicured gardens, cafe by the waves, and postcard-pretty scenes in every direction. Added bonus: we're on the landing path for jets and the place shakes and roars 5 times a day. Free vibrating bed!

Within sight are old fishing villages, hippy-era shacks, '80's open-air restaurants with names like Jezebel, and ultra-modern hi-style hotels with names like Op. Motor scooters are the majority transport, although push-carts offer a range from pancakes to garden plants! Oh, and the worldwide craze for MMA, or Thai Kick-boxing, started here and literally Booms! Take a look at tonight's card and place your bets. My bet is that we're gonna like it here...
