FIRSTS

Happy New Year, now that we're into it. Just being up here for Jan. 1 is a first for us. But there are so many more firsts happening this week. For example, the first doilies have emerged from the treasure boxes, lovingly washed and displayed for heritage wonder...Like the reflection at sunrise, a reminder of who came before us.

Also the coldest first week (although not a record). Because the heat is on inside, we're getting the first ever icicles on the north side, including on the feeder and ladder. Slippery!

First time there are 17 squirrels below the feeder (can you count 16 in this picture??). The pair of cardinals have been here, but first time the female has perched higher than the male. Girl power!

First time to see January sunlight at odd angles inside. First time the cheeky squirrels have jumped into the sunflower seed tub. Can't they wait for table service?

And many first time odd jobs. The 1,000-hour bulb in the kitchen lasted less than 100 hours. The microwave died and a new 50-pound Panasonic had to be carried up the snow hill. Early this morning the propane fireplace had to be coaxed on. Winter warmer-land!

Ah the joys of country life. The year has started with counting our many blessings and glad that the sun is slowly coming back north. What's your first?
