GREAT EVENINGS

November's been looking pretty good so far. The air is so clean and crisp that passing jet contrails look like sky serpents. Sure, we had a dusting of snow. But temps have been record-breaking near 30C and even the robins are hanging around, out of season.

More contrasts of the month. Almost all of the leaves have fallen, bringing rakes and blowers out for their reason-for-being. Yet in the fields the farmers are still baling hay, a weird but welcome third or fourth cut.

In the yard, an awesome scene on the wing. The biggest flocks of Evening Grosbeaks ever seen here, and apparently throughout the region. Famished frenzies all day long. Blurs of yellow as dozens converge at the same time. Bursts of skittish beaks more like a cloud of mosquitos, but much more fascinating. A huge WOW for many days now.

The sun is far to the south now, which let our soul follow the sol from sunrise on Georgian Bay to sunset 50 km away on Lake Huron, 6a.m. to 5 p.m. same day.

After a majestic sunset, home to the evening of joy shared for the election results in the States. Hard to describe the palpable sense of relief and hope! There will be chaos and revenge sewn before Jan. 20 but for now America has stepped away from a dark abyss to a fresh future. (Personally, near tears for the arc of a daughter of immigrants, not just enduring but triumphant...) We join most of the rest of the world in hopeful congrats to Joe and Kamala. Now the hard part...
