WHETHER OR NOT, WEATHER OR NOT

Weather continues to be a factor out here, rising and falling like hikers on Grouse Mountain. On clear days the snowcaps light up majestically, as if the spirits are lighting morning candles. A new wow-moment happens around every bend in a walk. Truly a magical place with nature overwhelming the scenic planes and boats and trains.

Then snowy, icy days reappear --- almost as bad as the weather back home. Indoors, the last hopes of the Chinese New Year hang in the balance. Nice weather for ducks? Branches are iced with glassy frosting. Make the best of it!

Luckily, a must-see indoor exhibit is on at the UBC Museum of Anthropology. There's the permanent collection of astounding west coast native art and totems. 10,000 yrs of culture before the decimation caused by European "discovery". But there's also a touring show of Australian Aboriginal art by 9 ground-breaking women who have broken away from traditional roles. Too many fascinating creative pieces to show here. Another case of thousands of years of mystic culture finally being recognized.

Spring can't be held back, even in the cold. Those ducks in the snow are now pecking at green grass (but they're different from our eastern ducks...). Snowdrops in snow plops! Daffodils emerge from snow cover like survivors from an avalanche. The Ontario Gardener is awestruck --- she won't have them for another 2 months! A riot of colours grow along sidewalks and parkways. And the Oscar for most changeable weather goes to...

2500 MILES TO ...SNOW & COLD?!?!

After a month away, had to go north to check out the home on the hill last Monday. Brutal cold and snow but the pipes haven't burst and the shingles haven't blown away. Who knows what the fish are doing under a foot of ice on the pond...

Back in Toronto, we're part of a massive Arctic vortex colder than... the Arctic! It's a garbage day in more ways than one. We can show proof of life, but just barely.

Hey kids! Let's go west to British Columbia, famous for balmy climate and early spring! Oh --- everything has to be de-iced first? The Rockies are majestic, as always. But look at that --- even Vancouver is white??

Yep, it's winter here too. Historic amounts of snow and cold. The apartment is welcoming but not warm. And that's not jet-lag hallucination --- the dawn is as frosty as back east.

What the heck?! We have never seen Vancouver in snow --- not even at the 2010 Winter Olympics. The locals are shocked but go on a snowman binge. Iconic beaches  and birds are snowbound. And it keeps coming all night...

So we've come cross-Canada to have...more winter! Vancouver's mild reputation has been snowed under. But the worst may be over. Signs of spring are encouraging. Rowers scull in view of snowcaps. Cavalcades of protesters emerge like grumpy bears out of hibernation. And brave crocus bloom, like giving a purple finger to Old Man Winter. Next week --- daffodils??

GRAY DAYTONA TO WHITE DAY-TONE

The weather wasn't getting any better in Daytona --- windy/chilly/rainy. Beach walks were deserted except for herons and bored lifeguards. Some indoor interest with a state championship in girls' volleyball. On the side streets something cheery is a yellow T-Bird. But beside it is a new brand to me --- a Japanese Mitsuoka looking like a Bentley til you notice the right-hand drive and licence. And then even cheerier --- the first robins of spring (they should arrive in Ontario in 2 months or so?!?!).

On the main shore road, two hotels bracket the old Daytona and the new. The restored Streamline Hotel is an art-deco beauty where a bunch of guys got together in 1948 to move racing off the beach and created NASCAR. Lots of memorabilia, rooftop vista, and real feel.

A quarter-mile drag away is the sparkling new Hard Rock hotel. Instead of car race decor, it's full of --- (duh) hard rock. Jimi and Janice, Fab 4 and Queen Bey, Mick and Bowie, Taylor and... A wow but it feels made-up and lacks real soul so far. Take me to the Streamline, and step on it!

On the one sunny day we walked the trails of Halifax River. One nod to the original peoples here is their well, still bubbling up clear fresh water. Stalking birds love it, lots of minnows. And on the first day of the Chinese Year of the Pig one of them was strolling nearby. Did she stoop and scoop?

Happy to head home on the usual epic 24 hours on the road. We slipped through the blizzards but got splattered and salted. Towns glowed but not from a sunrise. Always relieved to re-enter the best country there is, including a welcome-back smile from a cheerful border lady. And the Toronto greeting --- is that white confetti??
