Today is May 1, a holiday in many parts of the world celebrated as Labour Day. Or it conjures up dancing around the May Pole or the distress call of "May Day, May Day!" May your month be full of Maybees...
But first some follow-up from last week. The rehung clothesline has had its first hang so all the Pole jokes and puns have been polished off...Polished off?? And I am rarely impressed by advertising but this tribute to the Prince of music managed to add condolences but also highlight his Little Red Corvette ('63 split-window coupe in this case...). For the rest of us, the sun still rises in the east.
The work season is happening both indoors and out. The basement pantry needs a good cleaning after the winter mouse picnic, and a rearranging before this year's restocking. The chips are down along the fence line smothering poison ivy, we hope. Maple and cedar trees are being transplanted or added to balance off the stands of endangered ash trees.
Here in Birdland its been Finch Week. Waves and waves of goldfinches arriving daily. They group in the closest tree, checking out the buffet below. Then they glide down, attacking the tube of nyjer seed or monopolizing the sunflower seed hanger. The biggest crowds are at the old feeder with skylight -- this Yellow Mob even allows their red cousin --- a purple finch --- to chow down at their trough.
Despite the still-chilly temps it's supposed to be spring so a third-generation gazebo goes up on the deck (the first two had been ultimately shredded by local high winds and rain...). One page of instructions for a 4-hour job! But this one looks more substantial and ready for those sunny days.
Not today! It's raining again and will be coolish all week. But May is happening anymay; the ferry ChiCheemaun mayde its annual sailpast to start its schedule. Any more May-puns out there?
