A gorgeous but misty sunrise on this Mother's Day reminds of the awe, sacrifice, and love from my mom ---- what good memories from yours??...
Mostly, mom worked hard physically all her life. Harder than spreading wood chips to keep down the poison ivy. Riskier than climbing a ladder to prune trees. Much more difficult than making surprise arrangements over a smartphone. But they say it's all relative!
Another memory from growing up in a border town is bringing stuff over. My mom would get Marlboros and Irish Sweepstake Tickets. These days its car bras smuggled for cakes! She skinned her knuckles on factory machines, mine got skinned just stretching the bra onto the car. Her family had a cow in the shed, I have 4 (four!) cars in the barn. Unimaginable --- but she started it by conjuring up a red convertible on 40 cents an hour.
My mom loved nature and animals. In the mind's eye she gazes out the window and marvels at the cunning of a sparrow hawk readying to pounce. Or the arrival of the appropriately named rose-breasted grosbeak. We would both be surprised to see that turkeys can fly! Flickers drilling for bugs, like she gleaned for wheat in those Saskatchewan fields. And 3 doves in the tub ---- could her 3 kids fit in there?
Mostly, though, she loved the colours and blossoms of spring flowers. Us too! For you, Mom, here's a bouquet of affection in loving memory----
Sunsets compete to be daily spectacles and last night's was a doozy. It's awesome, like what mothers do all their lives. Sophie Chmill Wyszynski, I love you.
