A comfy scenic 5-hour bus yesterday and we arrived at Condominios El Faro (Spanish for "Lighthouse") in Santiago, the outskirts of Manzanillo. It belongs to a great friend from Calgary whom I worked with in Lithuania way back in 1991. We planned to meet him here but schedules got scrambled and we're in the lap of luxury on our own for a couple of days. (More angel stuff!)
The condo complex is about 250 feet above sea level and the view from the even-higher namesake lighthouse is stunning. Our #10 is a top-floor two-level loft style cheerful place with flow-through tropical breezes upstairs and down. Mmmm. So bright I have to wear sunglasses indoors. There are 3 balconies and 2 pools for gracious outdoor living. Pat gets to cook, and I get to drive a sunburned 1991 Ford Explorer with holey muffler, but it has Mexican plates so we pass as locals.
We drove into Manzanillo, the busiest port in Mexico. Huge piles of containers, mostly from Asia. Also a naval base to protect shipping I presume. Not much gringo tourism, but their claim to fame is the world's biggest sailfish derby, starting next week. That's me fighting a giant blue sailfish right at the harbour wall!
But back at the condo it's mellow musical moments. As the sun moves around the spectacular views are lit up or shadowed, like leading actors in a play and we're the enchanted audience. No Groundhog Day here to predict the weather, but the hummingbird in the palm trees will have to do as a substitute. Back home, it was cloudy so Wiarton Willie predicted an early spring. Here it's sunny so Hernando Hummer predicted more like today. Both right, we hope.
