ASH WEDNESDAY OR LATE CARNAVAL?

Wandering one of the neighbourhood colonias, we were hit head-on by a loud, cross-dressing, mariachi-band playing, shrine-carrying group of earnest yet festive paraders. Guys ran ahead setting off skyrockets that boomed like dynamite overhead, leaving smoke like anti-aircraft fire. The walkers mugged for my camera but the old ladies looked straight ahead. Where else do you see a member of Kiss walking next to the 3 Kings??

A real cultural surprise. Now all we are wondering is if was for today's Ash Wednesday ---- or was it a Carnaval celebration 3 days late?? Manana.
