Tragedy and Hope

One of my reservations about being in the USA is the ominous and random nature of the gun culture. That was borne out in the tragic shootings in Tuscon last Saturday. Obama's speech at the memorial last night included the plea for us to be better --- to live up to the expectations of kids who imagine a perfect democracy, a place where reasonable people respect each other's opinions and try to work things out peacefully. If only.

Today is the funeral of one of those idealistic kids: 9-year old Christina Taylor Green, the first of the 6 fatalities to be laid to rest. In the meantime congresswoman Gabby Giffords and several others are still in hospital fighting to recover. We hope for the best, and Miami mourns with the rest of the country.
