MARCH MATHNESS

It's our last full week down here and basketball-crazed March Madness is on. Do some mathness instead, below...

The Daytona 500 ran last Sunday with the skies filled with fast jets but slow skywriting. After the word "Love" was it (a)God, (b) Carefully, or (c)Car #88?

The weather has been foggy and windy most of the week, with sunny breaks for the Spring Breakers already here.

The same shop that installed Pat's Valentine fan also got rid of some rust on the driver side doorsill. The rust needed some deep filling but nice guy Tommy kept to his original e$timate.

We walked the 5 miles to the shop and back...twice :(. Along the way you see all kinds of whimsy, from gnomes to carhoods to a memorial grieving a local motorcyclist who went too fast, too young.

A local conservation area was way more interesting than just hiking trails. Floating grass islands for our pond? A shady tree canopy for the barn? Birds new to us. And thriving community gardens to make up for the decrepit ones elsewhere.

On the drive north from Daytona there's still a lot of evidence of Hurricane Matthew last fall. Smashed docks, ripped roofs, fallen trees. Even today the winds are still whipping sand across the highway, like the snowsqualls back home.

A daytrip to St. Augustine reminds of the oldest U.S. settlement, the oldest parish, the oldest etc. etc. (But what happened to the Indians??) Pat has a particular bond with the oldest schoolhouse, I like the lighthouse. And while we're there, why not sip from the Fountain of Youth?

OK, March math. In travels all over the world we have noticed that our home region has the cheapest food prices. Here's an example. Florida strawberries are in peak season. In Daytona they are 3 pounds for US$5. But in the Owen Sound flyer, Florida berries are 1 pound for C$1.67. At today's exchange rate of 1US$ = 74.7 cents Canadian, which is the better deal?
