A ROCKY ROAD TO CANADA DAY

Finally got some much-needed rain this week. But the big event was the rehabbing the upper lane with fresh gravel. To keep the weeds from reappearing, old carpet and some herbicide is applied first. Then a 3-tonne load of crushed stone comes grunting up in a low, low gear! The driver expertly lays the stone down over the 150-foot run. But then you-know-who has to move it again with shovels and rakes.

What the heck, why not? Since the driver is willing and able, up comes load number two: another  tonne of 3"to 4" larger rocks to line the steep part of the lane to prevent future washouts. Unfortunately, the concrete driveway gets badly cracked and stained from the heavy truck. Good intentions get punished?

But more shovel/wheelbarrow/rake and the first load gets spread, with some leftovers. It feels crunchy underfoot but looks good. That bare patch in the middle is a challenge for The Gardener to fill in with something low and green.

In the meantime the parade of nature goes on up here. Butterflies, dragonflies, rabbits fly. The only thing moving slowly is this snail --- the gravel must feel like a mountain range to cross!

Amid all the work we didn't forget Canada Day --- even the birds are dressed up in red. With all the grief and horrors in the world, this country stands out like a beacon of tolerance and diversity. O Canada, you're the best! Fireworks or fireflies??
