Catching up on movies was a good pastime because March was going out like a lion. Snow was still on the ground, even though the crocus couldn't delay its springtime solo.
Then it was sunny and warmish and the turkeys were in full eating and mating mania. Somehow a lone male (handsome??) manages to corral several hens and struts around all puffed up like a certain wild-haired Presidential candidate. Some fall for the show, some don't...
Then there was torrential rain that flooded local roads and made little waterfalls look like Niagara. Those crocuses in the snow are now floating like purple pool toys. The grounds are so saturated that the water pools up to the shed ---- oh-oh, rabbits live under there. The kids' sandbox next door might wash away like the beach did at Vallarta last month. But the fish that have overwintered in the pond are loving the fresh oxygen.
Then it snowed and froze last night. Sunrise reminded us of winter scenes like seeing reruns of missed TV series. Good thing that work on the roof got done.
Through all of this weather the birds show up as scheduled. Males and female cardinals whistle to each other like teens sexting. Woodpeckers knock knock knock on wood. And we've found a way to scare off the turkeys ---- just run out twirling and popping an umbrella while you cluck like a maniac. Try it while the neighbour's watching...
But if you're looking for a sure sign of spring ---- the Blue Jays are back this week (for the 40th time!) Go Jays, see you in October...
