Today, clocks were sprung ahead an hour. The weather here and back home is supposed to get more springlike with warmth and sunshine. And we have sprung ahead to our March rental in Cocoa Beach. It's the only new area of Florida for us this time. Like a box of chocolates (oranges??) you never know what you'll get...
The apartment is on the upper floor of a two-storey building next to the owners' home. It's only a block from the long shoreline and a few minutes drive from the main pier. Outside there's palm, mango, banana, coconut and papaya trees leaning over the huge 18' x 24' private deck. Great outdoor living. Inside it's called "The Hemingway" with a clutter of decor inspired by the writer's Florida era. A bit dark, a bit busy but with comfy couch, pillowtop bedroom and full kitchen and bath. And unlike our last place ---- an ocean of hot water!
Cocoa Beach is friendly for beginner surfers. A local kid named Kelly Slater went on to become 11-time World Champion Surfer. The world's biggest surf store Ron Jon has a massive HQ here with several buildings and acres of free parking --- now there's a popular attraction. But the town is also the port for all the Disney cruises, kayak safaris, and bingo boats.
Famed spaceport Cape Canaveral is just up the road. I was here decades back when rockets were smaller than SUV's. Now the facility is amazingly accessible with all the hardware and humanware on display. Always awesome.
Old Cocoa Beach is a typical main street with restored theatre, coffee shops, and galleries. Lots of parks and green space to explore. And what made us really feel like springing ahead --- a raccoon under the palms! See you next month, under the maples in Ontario??
