This is being sent via very iffy wifi --- if you're reading it, it got through!
The week started (and still is) in severe cold, in the minus 30's Celsius. Downtown Toronto was so cold the hot dogs weren't! We went to Kemble to say Happy New Year to the house but it was all snow all the time. Even the sun was too weak to make any difference.
Glad to be leaving the city, but had to dig out the garage at Wineva to put the car in hibernation. Then a first-time ride in the newish airport express train ---- on time, thrifty, and friendly. On the other hand the airport was chaotic, frustrating, and delayed. The wings had to be deiced in the -30C wind chill but then cooled off on landing in sunny Belize. From -25C to +25C in 4 hours; you do the math.
We've been here before so found the chicken bus and soaked in the road culture across the country to San Ignacio. Pleasant town with a dozen languages and ethnicities due to historic indigenous, immigration, exploitation, slavery, and religious persecution. Friendly, non-pretentious, musical, and surprising clean. Good vibe, colourful spirit.
Lucky to be here on Saturday market day. Huge area for food, clothing, tools, and gossiping locals. But breakfast is better at a place whose Mayan name translates to "Let's Eat!". Coffee grown just up the road and omelets the size of a hubcap. Water bags with a silver coin are hung in the windows --- they keep the flies away. Can anybody out there explain that?
We're at the cheap and cozy (12' x 10' room, but with sunny balcony!) Hi Et Hotel; nice pun, no? There's probably also the Share-a-Ton and maybe a Fore-C-Sons Hotel too. But it's rickety olde Belizean and great to be here. OMG its warm! Its warm!
