SEPARATING THE BUOYS FROM THE GILLS

Another posting that's short and early. It's the December Doldrums before the holiday storm. But also look for a clue in the last sentence...

If you're a sunrise spotter, this is the place to be. Every day brings a fireball or a pink-and-gray or a mackerel sky, like an artist's public gallery. On the bay, a Coast Guard ship hauls out seasonal shipping and fishing markers. It's separating the buoys from the gills!  But on our road, a real boy and girl are getting ready for snowtime.

The critters are still surprisingly active. Black squirrels play King of the Castle on the big ash tree. The goldfinches are much more social, landing in flocks on the remaining food bits. And even though the pond is skimmed with glaze ice, goldfish still cruise like the last orange tour boats of the season.

Early tomorrow morning we're off for a long bilingual journey. Check in next week for where and what. All I can say is that we'll be dodging traffic, darting here and there, but with an escape always nearby...
