What turned out to be a really bad week started out as just normal life up here on the hill. Floral colours seem to be extra vivid this year. Extra vivid home-made colours inside, too. Maybe there was an omen when the ducks hung out with the turkeys --- sort of like the lion lying down with the lamb??
Boat traffic is increasing, even with the ongoing downpours. The Chi Chee ferry departed for its summer sailings from Tobermory, complete with one-boat salute. We wave at the waves! And a cargo ship arrives, unloads salt, reloads grain, and departs all within 18 hours. Does it look lower in the water coming or going??
We were glad to work outside before the bugs and poison ivy season --- or so we thought. Instead, the black flies are already attacking at the hair line. And poison ivy is lethal even at the sprout stage. We both have the itchiest, reddest, scabbiest ---earliest---poison ivy rash EVER.
From bad to worse. The whole region has been hit with record-breaking rainfall and flooding. Both our homes are under siege. Up here the gardens, creeks, and catch basins are ready for Noah. And alarmingly, our Beach 'hood in Toronto has been mauled by high waters too. Daily live newscasts from our street show destruction and erosion. Instead of beach volleyball courts there's beach waterpolo!
From worse to worst. In the middle of heavy rains, our water system broke down! No water in the house. Our DIY repair attempts make no difference, so at least 5 days with no water til a plumber might arrive next week. Ironically, because of the heavy rain we can fill buckets from the barrels to wash dishes and flush toilets.
More worst and worst? We have had to break a major vow to never ever BUY drinking water in wasteful harmful plastic. Clean water is needed for cooking and scrubbing poison ivy (see above). But the plastic plaguing the planet is shameful. Last but not least, out trusty little Kia Rio will have to be towed into town this afternoon ---- wish us luck with what could be a major repair... How's your week been?
